What is myopia?
Myopia, also known as near-sightedness, makes things clear up close but blurry far away. It happens because the eyeball is longer, which causes images to focus in front of the retina. This is getting more common, especially in East Asian populations. By 2050, it's estimated that half the world's population will be near-sighted. Myopia usually starts in childhood and can get worse until the mid-twenties to mid-thirties.
Why is this important?
If not managed, strong myopia (worse than -6.00D) can lead to eye problems like retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and other serious issues. It also means needing glasses or contacts all the time, which can be a hassle and decrease quality of life.
